Sleep paralysis (plural: sleep paralyses) is a state, during waking up or falling asleep, in which a person is aware but unable to move or speak. During an episode, one may hallucinate (hear, feel, or see things that are not there), which often results in fear.

It is some minutes past 2am. I know this because 'Nepa' has just killed power. The luminous dial of my walk clock stood out like a painting in the dark.

I sighed; it is about to rain, a gust of wind blows up my window curtains, the smell of impending rainfall quietly sneaks into my nostrils.

Ah, I must quickly close up the window and head outside to bring in my cloth spread out on the communal wire strings. I am not happy about this, I just want to enjoy this early morning rainfall.

I made to stand up all be it reluctantly and then...I couldn't.
My arms and legs weight a ton, my owe torso didn't respond to my urge.

I tried again, my legs is disengaged from my body , my arms are not responding to my urges.
Terror gladly holds me in his grasp!

Alarm bells goes off in my head. 'May day' May day', I am under attack my mind screams.
I start to look for eerie shapes, smoky shadows moving towards me, red eyes of gnomes and sharp teeth of vampires.

I can see the headline now. 'Young man found dead' Cause of death unknown.
I looked around again, trying to find lurking figures with scythe ready.

I breath out deeply, this must be the 'spiritual attack'. I cannot see what is attacking but do I need too...

Some moments pass, my arms suddenly obeys me,my legs acquiesce to my urges.
I made to stand up and I can! I start to thank the lord.

My time is not up yet. This one will not sing with the angels tonight.

This story is inspired by true events. In Yoruba land, it is known as Òrìrìn. It is not an attack but a biological phenomenon.
